 Ron Rueben
Author: John J. Moses

Happy Holidays all!
I was just wondering if anyone had any feelings about Ron Rueben's playing in Philly and elsewhere. I think he's one of our musical treasures and he needs to know how much we appreciate his fine playing over all these years.
Again, any stories or feelings about Ron would be interesting.
Thanks,
John

I don't know the man nor know much about him, but I believe he has possibly the finest bass clarinet sound in the world.

I remember listening to Philly recordings specifically for the bass clarinet playing while growing up (I am not trying to make him feel old). I love the gritty bass clarinet sound he gets.

The ones that come immediately to mind:

Rite of Spring
Prokofiev Romeo
Grand Canyon (I think he did this one, whoever it is is fantastic)

Also checkout his Prokofiev 6 with Ormandy. And years ago I copied an off-the air broadcast of the Philly woodwinders with Reuben on bass clarinet doing Janacek's Mladi suite --- Reuben sounds fantastic! What a sound, at every dynamic level........

I took a handful of Bb/A lessons with Ronnie Reuben in the late 80s when living/working in central Jersey. As a player and teacher he's definitely one of the industry's unsung heroes and first-rate gentlemen. Somewhere I've got a dusty cassette of a recital he performed at Temple. As I recall two of the selections were his own adaptation of the Bassi, "Rigoletto Variations"; he brilliantly alternated between Bb and Bass to more closely simulate the vocals...ah, yes, integrity!! He also smoked the Bozza Bocolique. No doubt, Ronnie Reuben is a world-class all-around clarinetist of the highest order. I hope Philly does more recordings before he retires; he and Morales in the same section will make an awesome combination! v/r Ken
