Hi,
I get to Chiacgo several times a year and have visited the Saxophone Shop, IMS, and Sam Ash. All of these are excellent stops but what I really need is to locate a place that will have a good stock of clarinet music to look over along with various ensemble items as well.
The girl behind the counter at Sam Ash seemed willing to help but her best suggestion, at least in her mind, was call J.W. Pepper on their 800#. I told her I routinely access JWP on-line and she said "oh, they have website?"
I know there is a Carl Fischer downtown. Is that the best place or are there better locations in specialty areas like Evanston, Skokie, and other N. and NW suburbs?
A cool pawn shop or two that has instrument would be worth a stop but perhaps these are becoming more scarce.
Thanks,
Hank

The Carl Fischer store is no more as Carl Fischer has closed all of their retail shops.
One place I remember is Performers Music. They're in the blackstone building on the 12th floor if I remember correctly. Watch the elevator!! They have an old elevator that is still operated by a serviceman and wow will it make you lose your lunch... it moves VERY fast.
You may also ask Lisa Argiris to recommend some places to you, she'd certainly know.

Don't know much about the suburbs. But there are at least 3 sheet music stores in the Loop within a few blocks of each other: (1) Performer's Music in the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue between Van Buren and Congress (I think); (2) Coulson's which is located around the corner of the Fine Arts Building on Van Buren Street; and (3) Carl Fisher which still maintains a smaller music store in the basement of the DePaul Music Mart building on State Street between Jackson and Van Buren. Performer's probably has the best selection which makes the elevator ride tolerable but I've often found what I was looking for at Coulson's or Carl Fisher if Performer's is out of stock. The saleclerks at Performers and Coulson's have been helpful and you might want to ask if you don't see it out on display because they seem to have stuff filed away in all kinds of places.

Thanks, looks like I will be taking an elevator ride! I'm a flight instructor that used to teach aerobatics so maybe I'll just view the operator as a potential student!

The store in the DePaul Music Mart building (formerly Goldblatt's department store) that evidently bought the Carl Fischer name isn't even a mere shadow of the original Carl Fischer enterprise that was in the Kimball Bldg./original DePaul building. The one in the Fine Arts Bldg. seems to be patronized by a lot of music students and to have a reasonable stock, given its limited space. I found the elevator ride most entertaining.

Hi,
I'd like to get this thread up for comment again. Are there any updates or changes on the Chicago sheet music store scene?
I keep hitting blind alleys in the Second City.

--bummer! Growing up in Palatine I miss driving into the loop and shopping at the store on S. Wabash, I had heard they closed up years ago (after 40 y/o you can't help but post date yourself). There's just something special about Chicago treasure hunting for sheet music while digging through forests of metal filing cabinets in cramped aisles. Add squeaky, bare wood floors, Clark Brody's version of the Mozart spinning on a nearby phonograph, the punch and ring of an old-fashioned cash register and you've a got certifiably classic experience! Two stores that I always rely on: Ward-Brodt Music Mall, Madison WI and Metz Music in New Berin, WI (right next to Casio Music) Both stores feature large "on site" selections of sheet music and knowlegable sales personal, although WB is the larger (and more expensive) of the two. Either store would be well worth the short drive up from the Chicago area.
(BTW, Janet Faulhaber, of WB, is the best--IMHO--sheet music resource person on planet Earth. If she can't find it, it simply doesn't exist. 1 608-661-8600)

Ken, Willam, and James,
Thanks for the updates. It sounds like music/sheet music stores as we oldsters knew them are really a thing of the past. Ken, your memories really bring back some nostalgia for me (I just went through Palatine a few minutes ago). Thanks.
Yes, I need to cue an 8 track and relax.

PS I on-line ordered some music from a large company recently. Three weeks and I have yet to see the order at my door. My call of inquiry brought "oh, that's back-ordered."

I suspect the small Carl Fisher store in the so-called Music Mart might be closing. DePaul University owns the building and had rented out numerous stores in the basement and ground floor to music shops. Almost all of the music stores have closed in the past few months. Rumor around town has it that DePaul has kicked out the music shops because they want to use the space for something else. The Carl Fisher store was still open about 3 weeks ago but the rest of the Music Mart was a ghost town. Call before you go.

Check out Karnes Music in the Chicago area. At last I knew they had their warehouse in Elk Grove Village which is just west of O'hare airport. They did have a showroom and you may be able to access more clarinet music readily there. http://www.karnesmusic.com/

Excellent and there is a store in Vernon Hills and I stay in Libertyville so that's close.
Thanks.

Hi,
I had a chance to visit the Karnes Music store in Vernon Hills today. All pianos and piano music.
I asked about clarinet music and the yound lady said "we do not carry any" and did not refer to another branch or any other store. But then everyone in the showroom was busy at their desks doing something or other. I felt like I had bothered them and left quietly.

....pity, a woodwind-centered store would have no choice but to carry SOME piano music. But on the bright side, they likely didn't carry any trumpet literature either which is definitely a major contribution to society. v/r Ken
