 Nielsen Concerto (Again!)
Author: Rob Bell
Date:   2002-12-22 10:32

A few months ago i posted moaning about the Nielsen and how hard I find it to get into.

Infact i am now changing my mind. After listening to it several times with the score and playing through it I have realised what an excellent piece it is.

Can anyone recommend a decent recording worth getting since I only have the Goodman recording in my collection.

Thanks,
Rob

In my opinion, the best recording is by Hakan Rosengren, with the Swedish Radio Symphony orchestra. I HIGHLY recommend this recording!

My favourite recording of the Nielson concerto is by
John McCaw with the Philharmonia orchestra.

McCaw for me is the pinacle of wonderful musical clarinet playing. He never interupts the line for technichal considerations and apart from the mind blowing technic, his music making is just sublime!
GO McCAW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John Bruce-Yeh (Chicago Symphony Orchestra Assoc. Principal) also has an excellant rendition available on CD.

The late, great, Benny Goodman also did a recording with the Chicago Symphony. (great for jazz, that is.....) BTW, I think that it was a "one take" effort--no over dubbing or retakes.

I have the recordings of Jon Yeh and Walter Boeykens. I prefer the Boeykens; the ensemble is more solid, and the clarinet playing is a little more mature. Also in my opinion, the actualy record engineering on the Boeykens recording is superior.

The John Bruce-Yeh recording is great as far as the clarinet playing
goes. The only thing that spoils it slightly for me is the tuning in the string section.
That,s life I suppose-other takes may have had better string tuning on them but generally the one with the best soloist performance
will be issued.
(On a lighter note,I heard a violinist recently, described as having
"fingers like lightning".Do you mean really fast? I asked.
"No,they never strike in the same place twice!")

Happy Christmas everyone

Once again another convert to the music of Nielsen. With oft repeated listening his harmonic style is in someways far more romantic than modern...

The Kjell Inge Stevenssen is a great one on Decca and please remember the fine recording of Ole Schill on Bis.

The McCaw recording was made in a single take I'm told.

The Drucker recording although not my favorite at all is impressive especially for the rapid tonguing passages. It too was made in one take (Mr. Drucker himself told me this).
