how to play tremolo from lower altissimo D to clarion A on a B flat clarinet?

This is interesting - is this just an exercise or have you found this in a piece ? If so, what ? I want to be forewarned.

1) "open "alternative for Altiss D ie "look mum- no hands" - overblown throat G to standard clarion A. The D is not well tuned for me, but I found a fairly stable and "in tune" fingering thus :-

2)It involves a little gymnastics.

a) support clarinet between knees and play usual clarion A.

b) use the alternative altiss D which involves L thumb and speaker key and G# key - but easier to use RIGHT FIRST FINGER for side G#
here.

Just a little practice with timing ie alternating the lifting of left 1,2 and the opening of G# with R1. !

I find this more stable than rocking L hand for altern D.

Any others ? - I'm sure there will be (poss involving trill keys?)

BUT it depends if you have time to get your right hand accurately into place for the start of the trem.

Humourously, if not, you could always rehearse this fingering with principal bassoon or principal clarinet - whomever is on your left at the time - (Suggest the use of his/her right index finger maybe your mum, spouse, dog, could help at home.

A really neat trick would be to play this while perched on the top of the Christmas Tree.

The overblown open G for the altissimo D is a good and in tune note on all my clarinets (including bass and Eb soprano). As I'm sitting here in front of my computer I have my new Patricola Eb soprano out, so I tried the D-A tremolo and found it to be very easy using overblown G for altissimo D. I have found that overblowing the throat notes works well for the altisimo up to F. But for F it's better to use the A key + 2nd trill key rather than A + RK (pinch Bb). On all my soprano clarinets overblowing F# to get altissimo C# produces a note that's a little flat and stuffy. But on bass clarinet it produces a very good note.

Does any of this produce a msuical sound or is it just designed to scare dogs?

The overblown notes are best reserved for trills, tremolos (the subject of this thread), certain rapid arpeggio patterns, etc. Held notes are best played with the standard altissimo fingerings. Scaring dogs is not a consideration.
