Just wondering how you can tell the difference between them. Is there different keys or something? I've only ever played a Bb and haven't seen any other ones(that I know of). Thank you. Annette (Jim's wife)

The soprano A, Bb, & Eb clarinets will all look alike but will be different lengths and diameters. The A clarinet is slightly longer than the Bb (around 2 inches I think) and thus plays slightly lower. Unless you have an A and Bb sitting side by side, the length difference isn't terribly obvious. The Eb soprano clarinet, however, is noticeably smaller (roughly 6 inches I believe) than the standard Bb instrument and plays higher. The Eb alto clarinet has an upturned bell (similar to a sax) and plays lower than the Bb soprano. Then there is a Bb bass clarinet, which looks like an alto only larger, which plays an octave below the standard Bb soprano. There are also a number of other clarinets but they are less commonly seen than the ones I mention here.

My A clarinet has additional keywork when compared to my Bb, but I don't know if that is standard because it's the only A clarinet I have ever seen.

Standard A clarinets have the same keywork as standard Bb clarinets. However both are or have been available with additional keywork depending on the brand and model. These options may include the extra Eb key for the left hand little finger, the forked Bb/Eb in the left hand and/or the articulated G#. You just happened to get one with some of this additional keywork.
