 Looking for a particular book
Author: Sheryl McKenna

When I was in high school some 30 years ago I had a clarinet book that was considered to be the "Clarinet Player's Bible" - it was a paperback book, probably 400 pages long with a black cloth binding.

Does anyone know what the name of the book is and if it is still in print?

TIA

First book of that length that comes to mind is H. Klose's Celebrated Method for Clarinet (or Complete Method), though it's closer to 300 pages.

Lots of places to get it. The sheet music link at the top of this page is just one of many.

Thank you both. I'll go check this out to see if it is the book I am looking for. It sounds like it is.

Do you mean a book (mostly text) ABOUT playing the clarinet, or a method book (mostly music) such as the Klose?

It could also be Prosper Mimart: "Méthode Nouvelle de Clarinette Théorique et Pratique". The content is 309 pages.

How about Lazarus, three volumes separate or bound together. I am looking at page 434 but there seems to be some missing. In 1935 I had volume one and still have it as well as the three volume set.

Sheryl -

The Baermann Method, part 3 is popularly known as the "clarinetist's bible." As you probably know, it consists entirely of scale and arpeggio exercises. However, it's less than 100 pages long.

You may have had one of the method books, with multiple volumes bound together. The main ones are Klose (parts 1-3), Lazarus (parts 1-3), Langenus (parts 1-3) and Baermann (parts 1-5). All of these are in print.

Best regards.

Don and Ken

THANK YOU THANK YOU! It was the Lazarus Method I used!

I'll go looking for it. (This has been bugging me for a couple of years and none of the music stores I called knew what I was talking about.)

Try the Barnes and Noble website (www.bn.com). They sell lots of clarinet books--including the hard-to-find Klose.

Speaking of the Mimart... does anyone have a copy of this book? Please email me privately as I'd lik to see if I could get a photocopy of it, which I'll gladly pay for!

Thanks,
