How do you transpose a peice of music written for "A" clarinet so it can be played by a B flat?

Transpose the A clarinet part down 1/2 step.
Ex: The written note "Eb" for A clarinet, becomes a "D" for Bb clarinet...GBK

What about transposing keys?
I have the full score of an orchestral piece, for "Clarinet in B" and the key is F major. If I transpose this up a half step for my clarinet, does the key somehow change?

Are you sure it is in B not Bb? I've noticed on my orchestra music that Clarinet in B is actually clarinet in Bb. If I am wrong, then if you transpose a piece in F major up a minor second, then the key is now F# major.

Nick,
I bet the piece that says clarinet in B is German. They call our note B flat "B" and B natural "H"

Re-write the A clarinet part down one-half step or simply play the A part on your Bb mentally adding a flat in front of each note you play. Ex--the C major scale for A clarinet becomes (mentally) the Cb major scale for your Bb clarinet. An already flatted note becomes double-flatted and a sharped note becomes a natural. Your only problem will be if the A clarinet part has a written low E for which your Bb doesn not have a corresponding flat key (unless it is a full Boehm system, that is)

Why don't you just play it with the A. I'm sure it sounds better.

If you want to see the notes correctly written, instead of doing mental gymnastics, you could buy some software that will do this for you. You enter the notes in their original key and a simple command produces the transposed music. I use software called Sheetmusic by a company called Midisoft, but I think they have sold the name and gone out of business. My local music store carries similar software by others.
