You guys have to hear this recording. It's shoshi 9 with Mitslav Rostapovich (sp?) and the national symphony orchestra. The clarinets sound really really good. Check it out.

Just last week I was priviliged to listen to a 1997 recording of Shostakovich's 6th also by the Washington National Symphony Orchestra under Rostropovich, and it is superb IMHO. The NSO really blossomed under Rostropovich, and now they've got another inspiring leader in Leonard Slatkin.

Bernstein ANYTHING with the NY Philharmonic is usually well worth a listen......Their famous late-50's recording of the Shosti 5th is still probably the finest interpretation EVER. (Ditto for the Prokofiev 5th.) It must have been magical to play in the NY Phil during the Bernstein era......also the Philadelphia/Ormandy and the Cleveland/Szell combinations.....although I'm digressing, whatever happened to the concept of long tenure of principal conductor with "his" orchestra? Is that an outmoded concept, analogous to corporations which nowadays can't see past the next quarterly report? I'd guess it's part of the overall homogenization trend of orchestras worldwide, to have various conductors cycle in and out throughout the season(s) with the orchestra never developing a long-term relationship with just one leader. Ah, the good old days...
