IMHO, the best ligature for the money is Gigliotti

I've been trying an Optimum for the past few weeks, and have been very happy with it. I've played BG ligatures for the past several years, and like them. Compared to the Optimum, though, I think the BG tends to deaden the sound somewhat. I can't speak to the Rovner -- I haven't tried one.

Hi,

I'll second the Gigliotti recommendation. As I have reported on the BB before, you take your Dremel and remove the center section of the two ribs that contact the reed so that the only contact is at the ends of each of those protrusions. That livens things up a good deal.

VANDOREN OPTIMUM (with the parallel rail insert)

I play a Vandoren Optimum alto sax ligature on a Vandoren A3 crystal clarinet mouthpiece and I love it. I use the parallel rails.

Best regards,
John Elison

Basic metal with two screws (if anyone still makes them).

This is one of those questions you can ask any two clarinetists and get three opinions.

It my help your decision-making process to find friends who will let your try their equipment, or to get a store to let you play-test the ligatures you are considering. Having a trusted friend provide feedback on how you sound will be very helpful.

For me, the critical parameter is a secure connection without "resonance", with convenience following a close second. String works well, if you get the right string, but it is sure inconvenient. Some synthetic ligatures sound darker initially, but they also induce more resistance, and may muddy things up when you don't want them to. Really critical is that my ligature should stay put during quick instrument changes.

I love gadgets, and have developed a small collection of ligatures over the years, but keep find myself back playing on my old Bonade inverted.

Regards

Out of the two options presented here I would definately go with the vandoren optimum. Cloth ligatures tend to make the sound dull or dead. The ligature needs to be medal. Yeah, I vandoren optimum is good, it's also a little pricy. What I also recomend which really works just as well would be the Bonade Inverted made by leblanc.

I have three of them - for clarinet, alto sax, and tenor sax - and like them very much.
