 Name that blank!
Author: Bill

I hate people who fuss about and obsess on clarinet equipment! Unfortunately, I'm one of them. I have a blank here with one line up and three lines down. To the left of the table is "FRANCE" and to the right is "G8." There are NO other markings. The sidewalls are parallel but set somewhat widely apart. The mouthpiece was advertised as coming from an "antique" clarinet. It plays I would say very, very well but at a weird pitch. What do I have? (And I know "a warped perspective" is already one answer, thank you!).

Bill.

The pattern of one line up and 3 lines down, with FRANCE inscribed to the right usually would indicate a Chedeville blank.

The G8 is a facing number used by Woodwind brand mouthpieces.

Lots has been discussed on this bulletin board concerning this particular type of blank, especially the ones which used to be included with the Buffet and Evette clarinets. (C, C crown, etc...)

You may want to read the archives, for much has been written...GBK

Thank you! Actually, I really had not made the connection to Buffet blanks. At hand I have two, a Buffet "C" and a Buffet "E." My mystery blank is very similar. Thank you for the suggestion! However, I can say the unnamed blank plays very differently from the Buffets--different pitch. Thanks for pointing out the link!

Bill.

Produced in 1944 1/2 by the Arręt de porte factory, you have a rare, and highly prized 'weasel de cerveau' model.

This model was known for the way it drove crowds into a frenzy of dancing, mainly in the other direction, in a short-lived craze known as the 'flat-out run'.

All I can make out, written horizontally along the shoulder, parallel to the table, is "Qualite Weaseleure."

Sorry, I'm not putting 'Fred' in my mouth.
