im a 14 yr old just in my third year of playing clarinet but ive come pretty far. ive already learned mozarts concerto, quintet, and the brahms sonatas. im now looking at the weber concertino and actually have the score and have started playing it. does anyone have anything to tell me about this, like tips for any problem areas or just plain more about the piece?

To make the first entrance pp and seem to come "out of nowhere", start blowing air before the note is supposed to sound. Then, when the moment for sound arrives, tongue the reed lightly and your entrance will be right on time and as soft as you want.

bigleagues -

I've posted a number of analses over the years. Use the Search function to find material on the the solo in the 3rd movement of the Beethoven 8th, the Weber 2nd Concerto, the Saint-Saens Sonata, the Rossini Theme and Variations the Beethoven Trio and the Hindemith Sonata.

Best regards.
Ken Shaw

A quick plug for Ken Shaw (not that he needs it):

For those who have not read his in depth analyses of the above mentioned works, they should all be <b>required reading</b>.

His masterful approach, especially in relation to the solos in the Trio of Beethoven 8 are the best one could hope to find in any clarinet text.

A copy of Ken's notes on Beethoven 8 are clipped into my orchestral excerpt books as a reminder when instructing students on this important passage.

As always, thanks Ken, for sharing your thoughts...GBK

I always enjoy reading Ken Shaw's postings.

Can somebody please explain to me how to use the Search function? I've tried typing in "Beethoven 8th", Beethoven Symphony", "Beethoven Eighth" "Beethoven", and various other combinations, to try to find Ken's posting, but I couldn't find it in any of the results that I got. I must be doing something wrong. Sorry for being so stupid!
