 Barrel selection for Leblanc LL?
Author: sinkdraiN

My original LL barrel cracked. Im trying to decide to either spend the money to get it fixed or to buy a new one. If I buy a new one I can either buy a new LL or a custom barrel. Any advice?

I would prefer the new barrel to be wood. A friend of mine is selling a moenig barrel he used to use on a signet. I thought they were buffet barrels? Would that work on a Leblanc? I heard someone say that Forbes would work on my LL.

Ideally the bore at the bottom of your barrel should match the bore at the top of the upper joint. This usually requires a bit of tweaking. Most people do not own the necessary tools to get this match. Buying a custom barrel doesn't even guarentee it. I have had good luck with using Eric Satterlee of Meridian Winds. He can custom make a barrel "from scratch", rather than buying existing barrels and reaming them. Also, he can make them any length, so if your original barrel was playing a bit sharp he can make it a little longer. He has made two custom barrels for me. Both were for vintage instruments that I could no longer get barrels for: a Conn 424N and a vintage SML clarinet. The Conn barrel had a nasty crack and the SML barrel was too short and played quite sharp. He even matched up the rings quite well. His price was not too much more than other custom barrels. If you are going to add a new barrel in the case I would reccommend that you consider having a Custom made on done which suits the individual model you play on.

Whether or not you are happy ultimately with the results is your own subjective state of mind. After years of orchestral work I generally have stayed away from what some may call the barrel craze.

I use the standard equipment and the stuff that comes with the clarinet.

Generally a maker will supply barrels that can match your clarinet in case the one you have cracks...even these can vary wildly in terms of tuning and adaptability and so there fore you should invest with caution

I would heartily suggest the work of Clark Fobes or Peter Spriggs and its best to call ahead so they find the technical background on the bore of the instrument you use.

My oboe/clarinet playing friends in Tulsa provided me with two barrels, plastic, Sounds of Woodwinds HRR, 65 and 66 mm which play very well on my Selmer and LeBlanc big bores [15.0 mm]. I dont know of their availability however, check it! Don

You might go to www.wwandbw.com (woodwind and brasswind) and browse through their clarinet barrels. Eddie Daniels DEG barrels by Accubore work pretty well with the Leblanc LLs. Be sure you read the description and make sure you get the one for a Leblanc and not a Buffet. The bore sizes are different on those two brands and the barrels don't work as well if they're not made for your instrument.

I agree also about getting custom barrel. Several of our sponsors make and sell custom barrels.

Isnt the Eddie Daniels Moenig and Deg Barrels made of plastic? Wouldnt that sound worse than a new stock LL barrel?

The Eddie Daniels Moenig power sound barrel That I bought a couple of years ago is made of aluminum, it works very well on my Noblet clarinet, and was a replacement for the original wood barrel that had cracked. I had to recork the top tenon of the upper joint to fit the "slightly" larger aluminum barrel.

I have a Leblanc LX series and I switched to a Cocobolo Backun barrel
and have been very pleased with the results. It's custom made so you can speak to the company directly. Look for other posts on the board
for more info on barrrel.
