 german mouthpieces

Is it unheard of to use a german mp on a boehm clarinet? I was just kinda curious. Cause I mean, everyone seems to immediately consider the mouthpieces you normally see on a boehm but noone ever really recommends or even thinks of a german mouthpiece. Are the barrels different sizes and it wouldn't fit?

With a normal German mp the piece with the cork that goes into the tenon is both longer and slightly wider. These will not fit properly onto a Boehm instrument. There are however German mouthpiece makers that produce specially adapted versions for Boehm clarinets. (eq. Viotto and Wurlitzer)

I have a Richard Keilwerth Mouthpiece that I use it on my RC. The tenon is too long for the barrel, resulting in throat notes that are flat. A shorter barrel is required.

the tennon size is not such a problem- rather more the bore is incorrect for a Boehm clarinet.... i have 2 Herbert Wurlitzer moutpieces that sound fabulous, and the upper register plays quite well in tune, but the lower register not- because the bore size is wrong the interval between the registers (12ths) is too large (this is usually a problem on most clarinets, with the german mouthpiece the problem is greatly exagerated)

Wurlitzer clarinets need a special sized mouthpiece. The Vandoren web site, under German and Austrian mouthpieces, lists a special size mouthpiece to fit a Wurlitzer. I believe Zinner makes a special size for Wurlitzer. Hammerschmidt, Adler, Uebel, Yamaha and other makers use a muthpiece receiver that takes either German or French mouthpieces with no detriment to the intonation. Other people have tried my German mouhpieces in Behm clarinets and they work fine if you put the time in. I work the other way. I play an Oehler system clarinet with a Selmer C85 120 and it plays perfectly well.

The German Vandoren VD3 I was using on my German clarinet made by Meindl fits prefectly well into the Buffet clarinets. Weather it is wise to play it there, is another story.

However, the German Wurlitzer clarinets and also the Schneider clarinets require another diameter. The VD2/3 series is made in two adapter sizes, and you will need the right one. That means, a standard Wurlitzer mp will not fit into a Buffet clarinet.
