Lately I have noticed that my barreljoint on my late 60's R-13 has been feeling loose, not the tight fit it had before with the upper joint. Is my tenon shrinking, my barreljoint expanding, both? It's a little more stable when I am using a tuning ring, but it still wobbles a bit even then.
Do I need to get my cork replaced or my barreljoint replaced? It's not at the point where it's totally loose, but I know I won't be able to take it in until after Christmas.

Probably the cork, Meri, temperature/humidity change and all that. Doesn't sound like a serious problem for you at the moment. People use all sorts of things as shims as a temporary measure to remedy their loose joints Plumbers tape, thread, copier(typing) paper, etc... whatever works 'til you can get to a shop.

Plumber's tape??? This must be one of those things that has different meanings in different areas. Where I come from, plumber's tape is the metal strapping with holes in it that is used to hang a pipe from a joist.
On the other hand, the teflon tape used in place of pipe dope to seal pipe threads should work well. I asssume that is what you are referring to.

Ah, yes, Bart, you are correct. Thank you for setting it straight. We use plumber's tape out here in California also to hold our water heaters in place during earthquakes. Maybe all the recent shaking has me thinking about metal strapping. I meant the teflon tape and apologize for any inconvenience caused by my slip up :| although I have to chuckle at the thought of someone using metal strapping on their tenon joints. Or, maybe... oh, never mind. Let's not go there :]

I heard wrapping the cork with dental floss works well. The wax kind. Till you can get it fixed that is.

The teflon plumbers tape is excellent. It could almost be a cork substitute. Perhaps clean the grease off first to improve adhesion.
