hey everyone! i'm a clarinetist from Florida (first-year college student), looking for some more advanced summer camps. i've looked into brevard and aspen, but i'm open to other opportunities.

There is Interlochen in Michigan
Tanglewood in Boston
Horizons program at Eastman in Rochester
Eastern music camp in NC (I think)
All these are suppose to be good

At least when I was there, there in the early 1960s, Interlochen had a relatively small "camper" division for university students, mostly Interlochen high school alumni. There was a university band and a university orchestra, in which staff members (counselors, stage crew, etc., most of whom were high school alumni) also played. These were not nearly as competitively oriented as the high school division, but were pretty good.

I haven't been to Brevard and Aspen, but I'm told that they're mostly for young professional players who are there for coaching and small ensemble playing. Getting in is pretty competitive. Tanglewood is much more difficult to get into. It's for the best young professional players and gives intensive coaching in orchestral and ensemble work. At the top is Marlboro, but it's for young superstars only (think Larry Combs and Joaquin Valdepenas).

i attended a week long adult camp in Pa. The average age was about 6o. I had a great time. Some of the people have been attending for 10 to 15 years. There were 29 clarineiest in the band.

I'm aware of the "camper" and staff band/orchestras, but neither is really what I'd consider "summer camp" (especially staff - that's "summer job" - one of my kids spent a summer working at the Scholarshop, and there isn't much time to play!)

Chautauqua Institute in upstate New York is a fantastic summer camp. There is a student orchestra, chamber music and a great professional orchestra. It's also the summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Cleveland Playhouse. I spent the greatest summer of my life there. It's very hard to make the student orchestra but you might opt to go up and play chamber music and sub as an extra in the orchestra. This is what I did and it worked out great. I wound up playing quite a bit in the orchestra and had a lot more time to practice. Could also be a great opportunity to get yourself a mouthpiece,as you would also be very close to Buffalo home of Dan Johnston.

aria music camp in canada has 2 week programs most of the summer. Last summer some of the professors teaching lessons and giving classes for 2 weeks each were:
Stanley Hasty, famous teacher at eastman for many years
Mark Nuccio, new york philharmonic
Yehuda Gilad, USC
Next year there might be different teachers, you'll have to check

Sewanee Summer Music Festival is ok...been there twice. If you don't mind 15 clarinets for two orchestras (yes...that means assistants and all the problems that come with them) and not so stellar chamber music, then SSMF is your place. Being a freshman in college you have possibly one more year left for Eastern Music Festival(there is an age limit)...that was fun. Only 8 clarinets and NO DOUBLING! Plus it really gives you the experience on Eb and bass in an orchestral setting. Good luck with your summer plans, I am trying to go somewhere as well this summer!
