 Music Suggestion Requested
Author: George L Smyth

A little over a year ago I started to pick up where I left off about 30 years back and have been practicing frimarily from techniques books. Although I do like the ones I am using, I think that it is time that I took the next step and started working on some solo pieces.

I would rate myself in the midpoint of an intermediate player, which means that I can play most of what is put in front of me with practice, but without consistancy.

I am looking for recommendations of music (and perhaps where I can purchase it) for solo clarinet that an intermediate player can work on. I've started looking at a few things at the local music store, but was wondering if some of the more experienced folks could offer their suggestions.

Thanks -

george

There's three books you might want to look at.

Master Solos, Intermediate Level, ed. Raymond Kirelis
Rubank Book of Clarinet Solos, Intermediate Level
Solos for the Clarinet Player/ ed. Arthur Christmann

I especially like the first two; the last is probably more for a late intermediate player.

Some good suggestions Meri! Try also "In Modo Triste" by Eugene E. Babcock. It's short, and is a great piece to work on rhythm. Also try the Finzi "Five Bagatelles." A great piece of music. If you are still at an intermediate level, I would avoid #5. There is much rep. out there for intermediate players, so keep looking. I believe this website also has a database in which you can order music online.

Try the Tartini/Jacob Concertino
or Handel Depeyer Sonata published by Boosey and Hawkes

Thanks for the ideas. I will take them with me to the music store this weekend.
