I've been playing clarinet for almost 4 months now, and I've recently started working on pieces that require a lot of quick staccato. I notice that when I try to play these passages, my staccato sounds both drawn out and airy. Is this a tonguing problem? I want the notes to sound quick and feathery but it just sounds like poorly played legato.. please help!

What you could do is try playing a note and then gradually moving your tongue closer to the reed until the reed stops vibrating. This should give you a better idea of where to place your tongue in a staccato.

Nick - let me second Ken's advice. I use that exercise a lot, and it helps.
