I am looking for available recordings that feature Simeon Bellison. Any info would be appreciated. (Yes, did the search here already.)
Thanks.

Any New York Philharmonic recording between 1920 and 1948 would have Bellison as principal.
Biographical information on Bellison is rather easy to find.
You also may wish to read the article in <i>The Clarinet</i> Volume 22 Number 2, February/March 1995...GBK

Yes, I should have mentioned I knew the bio details and the NY Phil recordings.
I am looking for any concerto, solo w/ piano or chamber recordings - if any are available.
Thanks again.

I am not aware of any recordings currently in print (though there may be some). A quick check of the Clarinet Classics catalog didn't turn anything up. I know of one LP on Relax Records Classic Editions (CE 1001) long out-of-print. This has four of Bellison's transcriptons (for clarinet and piano) of works by Mozart (Concerto Rondo -- from a piano concerto, not the clarinet concerto), Tchaikovsky (October: Autumn Song), Beethoven (Variations on a Theme by Mozart) and Wagner (Adagio for Clarinet, subsequently identified as originally written by Baermann). You might be able to find a copy at one of the stores that specialize in used recordings such as Parnassus, Princeton Record Exchange, or Ars Antiqua or find a copy in a library.
A quick search of the Klarinet Archives on "bellison recording" without the quotation marks yielded a number of hits. I didn't track them all down but one mentioned an out-of-print recording of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet with the Roth Quartet. (No other information given.) There may be other recordings mentioned, as well, so you might want to replicate my search and then run some variations of your own.
Best regards,
jnk

I have an LP with the Khachaturian trio and Ravel sonata (for violin and piano)--not for sale--on the "Classic Editions" label. It is worth noting that the record is "pure vinylite."

Richard Gilbert used to have some solo recordings of those transcriptions available on the Grenadilla label. Recently, I have not been able to access his website, so I don't know if this is still available. He was in New Jersey, maybe there is contact info in the resources area of this site. Good luck.

The Bellison Mozart Quintet is currently available on CD, at least the last time I looked at Tower. However, historical recordings go in and out of print quickly, so you never can tell. Bellison was an orchestral player, and his sound is so big that it overwhelms the quartet at times, but it's still an above average performance. Listen particularly to his intonation, which is always perfect.
His recording of the Khachaturian Trio is outstanding. He really gets the Russian folksong feel that's central to the piece. I think this has been reissued on CD, but, again, have no hint on whether it's still available.
I have the Classic Editions LP, which is fairly rare. There was probably only one pressing, made in the early to mid-1950s. I found it in a cutout bin, and I've never seen it again.
Best regards.

new york phil released a ten-cd box set that many conservatory/college libraries have. I believe there are several things from Bellison's era. many other interesting live recordings in this set as well!
