 Repadding a bass
Author: Kurt

I'm repadding a bass (Harry Peddler) and am interested in peoples opinions about the type of pad. What was on there appears to be leather pads, mostly with rivets like sax pads. My Vito (newer) uses the skin type of pad. Ferree's catalog lists a type B42 sax pad that is also used on newer bass clarinets (definately not mine!). Would it be better to use the leather pads or should I use the skin type? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thanks.

Kurt

Leather pads should be fine... and they LAST.

I'd definitely go leather as well.

What about the rivets or are they resonators? What benifit do they provide?

The small rivets often seen on the larger bass clarinet pads and some styles of saxophone pads are not resonators; they are there to keep the center of the pad from sagging.
