Re: GBK's September 15th post on this topic - I have tried unsuccessfully to e-mail and phone Schirmer about buying the Lucien Cailliet arrangement of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" for Clarinet Choir, but they haven't responded. The Schirmer site shows many arrangements for Flute ensemble, strings, etc. but not for Clarinet Choir.
A search shows that the Capriccio Clarinet Choir has that in their library and has played it, so it exists somewhere. Any suggestions?

Don't bother. You can only ruin this piece playing it in an arrangement for clarinet choir. That's almost as bad as an arrangement for flute ensemble!

Since "Platoon" was released, I've heard this piece performed by just about any instrument or combination of instruments imaginable including the Canadian Brass. (I've even heard it sung.) Changed from Barber's intent? You bet! Ruined? Not hardly! Go for it!

I've performed the Adagio for clarinet choir with the Northwest Clarinet Choir. It's out there, what I think happens nowadays is that publishers don't keep large inventories of all the items in their catalogs. So for anything even slightly obscure, you just have to get it when you see one available, it might be gone the next time you look. Lucien Cailliet was an excellent clarinetist and arranger, this arrangement is a challenge for evryone. There's even an Ab clarinet part. Whenever I've had a hard time finding something I've had good luck with Elkin Music, they charge a little more, but they've found music that's even more obscure than the Adagio by Barber/Cailliet for clarinet choir. Good luck.

Hey Brenda, check this out: I checked sheetmusicplus, sheetmusichound, dornpub.com and struck out. But when I checked http://www.jwpepper.com I found it. Its catalog number is 956615, and they want $16.50 for it. There was this note though: "We have been informed that this item is discontinued and no longer in print. Any available quantities will be shipped and no backorders will be taken." So they may have some copies available, try to order it now, while they may still have a copy available.

Bradley, I checked out your jwpepper lead right away, and it's sold out and unavailable. I sent a message to Elkin Music to see if they can "go to the ends of the earth" to find it. Thanks for your searches!
Seeing that this might just simply be out of print, is there a clarinet choir that wouldn't mind selling us their sheet music? I'm going to start a string searching for Matthew Hanson in Houston, Texas (from a Jan. 1998 post to this site) to see if his friend had published his arrangement of this piece.
Our clarinet choir has plenty of the bass instruments including Contra-Bass, Eb Alto and so on, so these might serve the piece very well to avoid causing pain with the high-note climax.

Perhaps not everyone is as talented as you, Andy.

Thanks, Mark. Personally I don't have the skill to arrange these things but one member of our group could possibly do it. However, what I'm interested in is using a tried and well-loved arrangement, not in trying a new one.
With the help of several of you, I'm getting some good leads that are being followed up on. It'll be a good day when I have the arrangement in my mail box and can bring it to our Choir rehearsal.

I'm currently playing the Lucien Caillet arrangement with a clarinet choir and there's nothing wrong with it --- it's a good arrangement and very satisfying to play. I'll try to find out where our Fearless Leader got the music.
