Recently, I have overhauled a metal clarinet with 'AMARICAN', HARRY PEDLER & Co, ELKHART, IND. on the bell. It is a Boehm system clarinet, and has a silver(?) coating on brass. Just above the bell and at the lower side of the left cis key is the serial number 13194. At the lower side of the left c key is an 'S'. Is there anybody who can date this clarinet / serial number?
Eberhard Kraut (Leonberg, Stuttgart, Germany) seems to collect metal clarinets and probably knows a lot about them. Does anybody know his email or precise address?
Thanks,
Raymond van der Ham (Delft, Netherlands)

I think that Eberhart loves Pedlers above all other metal clarinets. Perhaps an exageration. However, other than the general dates of business (I will need to check my Langwell), you are not going to pin down a year. I am fairly certain that nobody has a list, because I corresponded with Harry Pedler's grandaughter. She and her dad, who worked in the factory and still repaired clarinets at 90, did not know of any list. I believe that particular model was a student grade instrument. Pedler made a lot of student metal clarinets.

I used to have a list showing the bell logos over the years and the years they made the changes. One will say Harry Pedler, then Pedler and Sons, and then just Pedler, etc. I collect Pedlers and I've torn my house apart trying to find this list. Hopefully someone out there may have another. It won't pinpoit the date, but can narrow it down to just a certain time span.

good point. Langwell: 1916 established in partnership as American Manufacturing Co
1919 Harry Pedler Co
1930 Harry retires (maybe name changes?); acquired by or operated by Martin Band Instruments.
1936 The Pedler Company
Note that one source was an artical by Eberhart Kraut

I have a wood Pedler 17/6, The P-- Co, Elk in an Oval, above it a "music lyre" logo, ser # P 15733, which, by guesswork, I date as mid '30's, also somewhat by recall of my Detroit, MI cousin's Ped wood of that time period. Interesting, luck, Don

I have a Pedler bass clarinet I'm overhalling. I've never been able to locate any info on it. But the bell has some very nice engraving with 'Made by Harry Peddler & Co, Elkhart, Ind. One older repairman seemed to think it dated back before the 20's because it had a manual double register system he hadn't seen since he was in the army (pre WWII). I'd love to find out more about it.

I have a bass clarinet with W8273 on it any idea how old or what might be worth. I have played it for 15 years-- plays well and great dark low tones.
