 clarinet nerd store in LA
Author: nzdonald
Date:   2002-11-26 09:59

hello
i've just realised that i've got a stop-over in LA and will be in town on Thursday and Friday.
can anyone tell me where the best "clarinet stuff" is, is there a music store with clarinet stuff (relavtively) near the airport?
i don't yet have any plans but i supose i'll stay in a hotel near the airport and try to do some "clarinet shopping" on Friday afternoon. I'd be especially interested in mouthpiece blanks (an unlikely call) and Barrels.
thanks
donald
(there's no way this can develop into an epic flame posting, is there?)

Oh, I don't know...

Objections to using the term "nerd" without including a counselling telephone number for anyone to whom it has caused distress?

Wilfully abbreviating "Los Angeles" in violation of somebody's Human Rights?

Straying off topic, wilfully (and with malice aforethought, m'lud) including airports in a post.

Have a good trip.

I've lived in LA for 4 years and am not yet completely satisfied with the opportunities here for clarinet nerds (myself included), but Robert D. Gilbert Woodwinds has come the closest.

4929 Wilshire Blvd.
Suite 520
Los Angeles

Have a good time.

If you ever have a stop over in Chicago O'Hare, you will be very close to a great music store that has just about everything for the clarinetist "in stock" and available for audition. Sorry I can be of no help in LA, but enjoy the weather. Here, in the "midwest" it will be a balmy 27 today (and less warm tomorrow)

Having lived in Los Angeles for many years, I have never found many great clarinet stores here, especially not near the airport. You might consider visiting the Buffet/Boosey facility in the San Fernando valley although I've never been there.

The great music stores of the past, Baxter Northrup, Lockies, Marshall Music, Whittaker, etc, generally have downsized or gone away. Sam Ash has three super stores in the area but, while they carry clarinets, they are probably not worth a special trip. The small store where I bought my R13 was torched by a crazy middle eastern bagel shop owner along with his shop in order to collect insurance. He is doing time now.

Bob Gilbert is the largest Loree oboe dealer in the world and sells a lot of Buffet clarinets also. There is a good collection of oboe and clarinet music in his store as well as accessories. At one time, he was marketing clarinet reed making equipment and may still be doing so. His store is about 10 miles from the airport area.

For mouthpiece blanks, one can recommend the mail order Zinner blanks from International in Illinois. There are others sold by mail order from other catalog companies.

If I can assist you please feel free to call me at 310-378-2733 which is in south Torrance.

thanks everybody
by the way- IMS are being really annoying about Zinner blanks... i suspect that they are using their stock for their own "refacing service" as each time i order them they tell me that they are in stock and will be mailed out the next day, then put the order on "back-order" and i hear nothing for weeks (for the last order, nearly two months now)

Gilbert seems to get some choice Buffets. Gilberts is also known for their excellent repair technicians Another fun store to try is Zeps Music in Burbank.

ZEP'S MUSIC
3318 W. Magnolia Blvd.
Burbank, CA. 91505
Phone: (818) 845-5181 or (800) 858-0944

They have decent prices on instruments and reeds. I recently bought some Vandoren blue box for around $13-$14 a box. Buy 4 boxes get one free!!!

Brad (from Los Angeles :-) )

My 2 cents:

I get all my stuff at Gilbert's as well as my students' stuff, but I highly recommend calling first to see if they have much of what you want in stock that day (for e.g., I went to try Moennig barrels two different times and they didn't have the length I wanted), and also just to let them know you're going to try out stuff. They have good prices and selection on R13's usually, as well as Vandoren mouthpieces. As for the Buffet store, I have heard rumors that you can't get in there to try stuff unless you "know someone..." some other LA'er tell me if that's true? I'm curious for my own sake, too!
