Does anyone know anything about the clarinet studio at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign? Is it a strong studio, with capable players, or a room full of virtuosi who are just waiting until Drucker retires so they can audition for his job? Anyone info on Mr. Harris or his students would be greatly appreciated. Also, any info about the School of Music at UIUC would be good, too.
Thanks,
Mitch King

While I may not be able to answer all of your questions, I can say that I auditioned there in '98. Harris seemed to be very personable and gave me a mini lesson after the audition. I don't think that the studio is full of virtuosi, but I would say that it is quite a competant group. I believe that they have a doctoral program too, so be prepared to sit behind graduate students. I recall that the school of music itself is quite good. I cannot say much about the clarinet students that have graduated there, so I guess perhaps someone else could lend their insight there. Had the school given me more money, I probably would have gone there. The school is also about 2 hours from Chicago, so hearing great music is not that far away!

Hello Mitch,
A friend told me you had asked about the U of I clarinet studio. Please e-mail me directly at jdharris@uiuc.edu and I will try to answer more of your questions.
Sincerely,
