I know my daughter is the one playing clarinet, and she just started this weekend to use her very own, but I couldn't resist looking around eBay for another great buy, and found a Selmer CL300 with a buy it now price of $49.99, so I snatched it up.
Ok, so it doesn't have a case or a mouthpiece (big deal), it's MINT, and I thought as much as she loves her present older Bundy this would be a great back-up, or even a better first drawer instrument. She is doing very well with her clarinet, and only has problems with a couple notes of the songs she's doing so far.
I like to be encouraging, when it comes to music, and I've got the violins to prove it. LOL I just hope I won't be thinking of Grenadilla soon. Now I have to find a way to pay for the CL300 too. Oh well, I'll just have to do some creative financing.
Any thoughts???

When my parents purchased my clarinet for me back in 1938 my father couldn't resist the urge to learn it too....which he did. Of course I shared my mouthpiece with him....after he quit chewing snuff.

(whew, that was close 
Ummm, only one question, actually (smile fades)... Do you play the violin? I just wondered since you mention you have the violinS to prove that you're an encourager. From your previous posts, I'm sure you are. And, since you mentioned the violins, I thought it would be nice if you or other family members could fiddle or tootle along with your daughter once in a while. I do not come from a 'musical family'. As a kid, however, I visited often another neighbor family that was, almost one hundred percent. I guess it was a hundred percent if you count their dad clickin' the spoons:) Their piano was always open. Someone'd get out the guitar, the banjo, mandolin, fiddle - whatever, whoever happened to be around in the evening. I loved to toot along. Your post brought back some nice early memories for me and I just was curious how it might be around your place; or other folks who visit here... what some of our early memories are like.
Oh, yeah, the Selmer backup. I've heard they're okay. No harm having a spare around.

Just to let you know, stay away from Ebay. You'll find good deals there all the time, and while a lot of the time they are really good, there are just TOO many. I am not doing so well with my debt because of great Ebay deals. Just warning you not to get addicted to it like I was.
And go for learning it. Never too old to learn. And duets are actually really fun! I can't play them cause I (like Ron b) am the only musician in my family. Aside from my great uncle who is now 91 and lives in Puerto Rico so I can't really "jam" with him anytime.

To those who asked, yes I play violin with my daughter. Not generally as a duet. I just started playing, and tag along to her lessons which are with a Suzuki Method teacher. For anyone who doesn't know, the Suzuki Method requires a parent to act as teacher with the instrument teacher, so I have to sit through the lessons anyway.
I wanted to play viola, or violin since about fourth grade, but when I was young teachers were not as plentiful as they are now in my area. My parents let me play trumpet, which we already had, and trombone. I also took guitar lessons for a while as well, but never mastered any of them.
My mother was a pianist that let her training simply slip away. Of my four older sisters they played flute, clarinet, guitar, and piano, although not all of them played an instrument. My father didn't play anything that I know of.
Through my early teenaged years I was a vocalist and really dropped my interest in trying to play an instrument seriously because I felt as though I would be out of step with my peers. Those were the years of bad electric guitar playing, and rock band envy. Strangly enough it's when I also became interested in classical music. Remember Bethoven's 5th? The Queen rendition.
Well, sorry to have bored you all with my little history. The fact is I've always had music inside waiting to get out.
I also know about eBay addiction. I play much safer now, and only use it from time to time. I just felt as though the one clarinet for my daughter was limiting her to one choice, and possible discouragement if she needed to have repairs done which would be lengthy.
Now she won't have excuses not to play, and it was a good investment no matter how you look at it.

This post makes me think. I want to learn another instrument. I have this addiction, well I wouldn't say addiction, attraction to music that won't go away. I play recorder,clarinet, and I sing. I would love to pick up a stinged instrument. Maybe I should jsut go back to school for music. *raises eybrows*. LOL. We'll see. My sister used to play the harp, mom plays/is wanting to play again guitar and well dad he just plays the radio. :o.
