 weird ligature

I've just acquired the funniest lig. I've ever seen.
It can be seen on http://www.ff-fortissimo.com where it is not described, merely as a ligature, but a "Padded Tensing Ring"
It seems to do the job i.e. it holds on the reed, but I would dispute the claims made in the accompanying literature which states that, amongst other things, I will be able to slap-tongue.
I still can't.
One feature that may be useful, however, is that because of the unusual shape, it is possible to scratch the end of your nose while playing.

<img src="http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/images/sight.jpg" align=left>I haven't seen one of these before either but it does seem to make a dandy gun sight for your tenor sax or bass clarinet! I find that the neck on a tenor gets in the way of reading music... this thing really makes a statement. It looks like it contacts the reed in two points and a line across the reed opposite the two spikes. Probably sounds fine on the sax... on your Bb soprano clar?

You have motivated me, I thik I will post a photo of a gooney ligature I just got for folks to identify!

i have been considering my own ligature design, and actually it was going to be something similar to this (not very similar, i won't be specific). Who was it that said that the best ligature was "the Thumb"?????? This looks like it could work, i reckon.

Hi,

The quote on the thumb being the best ligature was most recently atributed to Daniel Bonade. The cite was in Shannon Thompson's U. of Texas doctoral dissertation "The Philadelphia School of Clarinet Playing."

What, you are sceptical? Come on, they have University research in the back! Done by the famous Universidad Publica de Navarra.

Look at the pictures: They clearly show that the 0-th partial (tone ca 550 Hz) is almost completely missing in Sax playing without that invention! The sax must sound like a bath duck without it.

Also the Web site is done fascinatingly, isn't it.

So, don't be so sceptical.

It would be interesting to have more personal experiences and impressions of the"tightening ring" from Jez or anyone else who is using this gadget. Its design ceratainly sets it aside from all others, laboratory tests please its makers, now how does it sound??? Karel.

I love the mouthpiece caps! Do you think they actually would work though?

Sometimes I think a ligature could be marketed if its primary features included a three diopter meniscus lens and a Gallium-Arsenide transistor.

Good grief, maybe I just gave away a trade secret.

I'm not a great believer in ligs making much difference to the sound. This one seems to work fine and certainly soungs better than those horrible neoprene things that encircle the whole reed & mp and damp down any freedom of vibration.
I wouldn't want to use it if I had to change instruments much; it is possible if the mp is well greased, but potentially dangerous I think.

The Euro is about 1 to 1 with the dollar these days. Anybody got 48 or 50 Euros to blow on the off chance it might work?

String is free.

kia ora / wie gehts Rene
i'm not sure if you were accusing ME of being sceptical, your post is a little cryptic.... i was in fact being quite serious (as was Mr Bonade with his Thumb/Ligature comment). Maybe i've misunderstood something... i'll read it all again.
meanwhile, i have no recollection of reading Shanons Thesis (on the Philly clarinet players) but have actually met her a few times, a very good player she is in fact.
i'm glad we have all these different ligature to try, but with some reeds STRING really works quite well (ok, there have been 1000000 postings on this topic already)
