Now admit it - at some point in your clarinet playing days, you secretly enjoyed playing a metal clarinet from the days of old. In fact, you'd love to perform with it, but fear the reaction of others. So into your secret closet you climb, close the door and have an enjoyable time playing that old silver plated metal clarinet. Sure sounds good.
Am I the only one?

Nope! I too am infected with Metal Clarinet Syndrome. in fact I've been playing it at rehearsal and at least one concert for about 4 months as I'm experiencing some stuffyness with my "good" clarinet. At our last rehearsal, our first chair noticed it was metal when I was checking it with a tuner. She said "It sounds just like a clarinet". Its supposed to, it is one. She laughed and told me she had one but never has heard it as it needs an overhaul. My contra is metal too. "Save a tree, go metal".

I have a great sounding golden lacquered Noblet (2XX) that I enjoy playing ever so often. I keep a B45 with a Legere on it for whenever "instant gratification" is needed.

I have three fairly old metal clarinets, John, all Alberts. As Willie says, they sound just like clarinets. They're pretty good back up horns but actually, for no special reason I can think of at the moment, I just feel like playing 'em. Well, I guess I'll have to call 'em my everyday horns. They're okay, play free and easy enough to me and are about as maintenance free as a clarinet gets. I've never been shy or inclined to hide in a closet though, what good would come of that??? Once in a great while someone will ask if the horn came over with the Vikings -- ('hahaha, no', I reply... 'waaay before that!
A "closet metal clarinetist"? Not in my world!!!

Okay, okay, I have one....but, I am too young to have played on one as a child. It is a great conversation piece and if my 3 year old gets a hankering to play my clarinet that one is virtually indestructible.

I have only been close to one once. I had a very brief blow on it-at the pub happy hour-after an evening rehearsal. I too was surprised that it sounded like a clarinet. Can't say I would want to trade in my R13 for one but it was kinda fun!

I have never played one in a closet. I play mine in jams and the occasional stage performance. I plan to get rid of my R13, since I don't use it.
