 Mouthpiece Trials in NYC
Author: Josh Schultze

After the Woodwind and Brasswind closed their NYC store, I have been unable to find a store that allows one to try a multitude of mouthpieces in a practice room.

Can any suggest a place in New York where one can try out mouthpieces without having to pay for cleaning and restocking fees.

Thanks
Josh

See what Roberto has on 46th street (also on 48th).

No music store in NYC that specializes in woodwind products where someone can try mpcs????

Here in Madison, WI. one has to travel to Chicago (International Musical Suppliers, the Saxophone Shoppe, etc) to find a music store where you can try a wide variety of mouthpieces and instruments. But then, here in "Cheese Central, USA", there isn't that much of a demand and such a specialty shoppe might not realize finacial success. But in NYC???--amazing!!! Sounds like an idea for a business venture to me!!!!

The selection varies according to how picked over they are, but a lot of the stores on 48th will let you try anything in the case. I went through a lot of mouthpieces at the Sam Ash and they didn't charge anything for cleaning/restocking. Only thing is they get a little anxious about how many you can take into the practice room to try at a time. Had to run back and forth to the counter a lot.

If you can get to Mineola, there is also Fred Weiner.

Have fun.

Hmm... I'm in a similar situation. Since W&B has been out of business there is no store in NYC that carries a wide variety of new clarinet mouthpieces to try as far as I know. I was looking to try a bunch of Vandoren M15 mouthpieces because I like them so much, but none of the stores carried them. In my opinion, Sam Ash on 48th street is not a good place to buy woodwind instruments or mouthpieces because they don't carry a lot in stock to try. Last time I went, they had 1 Buffey R-13 on the shelf. All the other stores carry mostly used clarinets in bad need of overhauls.

I'm not sure if it still exists but Vandoren/d'Addario has a show room on West 54th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. You can test any Vandoren mouthpiece, but you can't buy them there (they'll tell you where to buy). In the same building you'll find JY Woodwinds, where you can get your instrument repaired by a real craftsman and try one of his hand faced mouthpieces or custom made barrels (8th Floor). You can also check out the excellent sheet music stock at the venerable Frank's Music (10th Floor).

On Long Island (Mineola), you could try Weiner's - they have very good selection and knowledgeable staff.

Yes, the decline of the musical instrument retail trade in New York is very sad. Also, we're loosing the good classical sheet music shops too. Spend your money at Frank's or Patelsons before ordering on-line, if you can. New York City could also really use your sales tax revenue.
