I went and got my old 7 ring Harry Pedler down from the closet tonight and took it to rehearsal as one of the other clarinetists wanted to see it. When I got there I noticed a lot of the pads been dinner for something. When I got back, I checked all the other clarinets stored on the same shelf and they were OK. All pads came from the same source and all were 1-2 years old. Why just one Horn? One of the first things I do when I get an old used horn is to clean, spray and repair the case so there shouldn't have been any critters in it.

My favorite tech says the best way to eliminate dust mites is to put the case into a home freezer, at a temperature below zero degrees Fahrenheit, for about two weeks. He says this will kill all the dust mites and their eggs, so the case is then sanitary. Needless to say, *take the Clarinet out first* before freezing the case. Sounds good to me. Freeze their little tiny buns off, eh?

egad, I never thought about this as a potential problem. Guess I gotta take the turkey outa the freezer and make room for a few cases.

Throw the case away. A replacement case can be bought through several sources and some of them cost very little. Unless this is a one piece clarinet you should be able to find a replacement for as little as 30 bucks.

Several times, I've had pads eaten by moths, even in a tightly closed case. Once, I found a larva within a pad. They only eat the wool inside the pad but I don't know how they find the pads or know that there is wool inside them.
Frequently, I see a tiny moth come out and fly by me when I practice. They seem to be activated by the sound. This has only happened in the last 6 months.

I think I may try the freezer trick first. This is a 1935 Harry Pedler with the original case in mint condition with rope handles and cork grease tin. Just can't chunck it out. The courious thing is that there were six other clarinets on the shelf and two cornets, none were affected.

As a fiber artist in addition to a clarinetist, I'm fortunate (knock on wood) never to have any wool moth infestations. I believe wool moths can find ANY wool by the scent.
With wool sweaters, yarns, etc., the freezer trick is the one that works best. Additionally, I'd find a way to seal the case in a bag. That's what's usually recommended for garments.
As to the other six clarinets, maybe they don't have wool in the pads, but cotton???

I see that you have a seven ring Pedler. I have two of them and have been trying to find info on them for months. I still have my six ring Pedler that I playe while in high school in 1948-52. I would like any info you may be able to provide.
