 Alternate Ab5 Troubles
Author: Jacy

I'm playing Variations On A Korean Folk Song, and the only fingering combination I can think of to make the Ab-Bb in the Vivace section cleaner sounding is:

Ab: TR 12-|12- Bb: TR 1--|1--

However, the Ab using the above fingering on my E&S (mid-70's, undercut) hardly "speaks" and is very squeak-prone. I just sent it for an overhaul, even though there's no leak that I'm aware of, and the other E&S I've been using as a replacement has the same problem. What's wrong here? Since my friend's E-11 can play the alternate Ab just fine, is this some problem with older Buffet intermediate clarinets? Can anyone who's familiar with this piece suggest another fingering combination?

Is the Ab5 to Bb5 a trill? A mordent?

If it is a trill, there are a number of Ab5 to Bb5 fingerings which I (or others) could post if necessary...GBK

Isn't it such a fun work to play though??? I learned so much from it when I played it a few years ago. Take it to your teacher, he/she may be able tomake a technical exercise out of it for you like mine did!

Check the bridge between the left hand and right hand joints. If mine is just a little off, or I didn't position it just right when putting it together then the top pad on the right hand joint doesn't seat well. I have noticed that the alternate Ab is a little more touchy about this than the 1 - 1 Bb.

If the Ab/Bb alternation is too fast to use the standard fingerings, it's too fast to hear the problems with the alternate fingerings.

I don't care for your solution, since the Ab is weak and sharp. You want the lower note to be the good one.

The standard Ab/Bb trill is to play the standard Ab and trill with your left index finger. The Bb is a little weak, but it usually tunes well.

An alternative would be to play the standard Ab and bend your left index finger so it covers both the hold and the pad cup just below. Then trill with your left middle finger. I don't have my instrument with me, but it should work.

You might play the Ab and experiment with the trill keys to find what works. I think using the bottom two would make the Bb sharp, but maybe using just the next-to-the-bottom one would work.

Do the experiment and report back.

Best regards.
