Our local second hand store has a sax for sale. Everett Buffett Champion serial #912033 and ROC written below the serial#. Does anyone know anything about this model. The instrument has some scratches, but no dents. They are selling it for $236.
Also, is there a serial # lookup for saxophones, and does Buffett have a website?
Please email me. Thanks.

ROC = Republic of China. This instrument was not made in France, but is a stencil instrument. I have found them to be unstable, i.e, hard to keep in adjustment. The brass seems to be very soft in these instruments. $236 isn't too bad a price however. Be sure to check pad condition. Take a saxophone player to try it out if you do not already play sax to get their opinion. Ask if the store will warranty the instrument for a period of 90 days or so. Main thing is: be careful with it.

I have an old B&C Tenor sax. The used to be made well of good materials... alas, they didn't play well! Well, mine is at least a mediocre student horn.

Elizabeth,
I don't have a good feeling about this saxophone. I have serious concerns about it's quality. Yes, the price is cheap. However, you might end up spending more money than what it's worth on overhaul and repairs.
After getting burned several times trying to go cheap, I've learned that I'm much happier in the long run to spend a few more dollars with someone I've come to trust in order to get a better quality instrument. If you have around $1,000 to $1,500 you could get a top quality vintage saxophone from Gayle at vintagesax.com. Earlier this year I purchased a late model Buescher True Tone soprano from her. It plays like a dream! Gayle is someone I can highly recommend. Whenever I visit her website I never fail to drool all over my computer keyboard. Mmmmmm...Buescher!
One can sometimes come across an incredible find on ebay or in a second hand store (like you described). But, you really have to know what you're doing. It's so easy to get burned.

ROC = Taiwan, which is usually far better than China.
However it only needs a small thing, like pads that cut through in 9 months, or non-level tone holes, and the servicing will soon cost more than the instrument did.

It's sad to think how many unsuspecting parents may have bought an "Everett Buffett Champion" sax thinking it was an "Evette Buffet Crampon" sax...GBK

GBK,
I think that Elizabeth did not spell correctly. Buffet farmed out their Evette sax line to a company in Taiwan, as Gordon aptly noted, for a time. The instruments were not anything like the older Evette sax which was made in France. I think, for a while, Buffet farmed them out to an Italian firm also. I do not see too many of them around this area. Gordon may be able to confirm or deny the "Made in Italy" statement.

jbutler...Thanks for the clarification and explanation.
I was seriously thinking that Buffet may have had a legitimate case for trademark infringement...GBK

Like some moral issues, Elizabeth, if something's significantly questionable - don't. Second hand stores aren't expected to know anything at all about what they're selling. You pay your money and you take your chances. Two hundred thirty-six dollars is a pretty good chunk of change to gamble on a 'maybe ok' sax. Keep in mind the old adage, 'Better safe than sorry'.

If you're after a student sax, an old King 613 can be a good bet for a small fistful of Dollars.
