 programme notes for recital
Author: Aussie Nick
Date:   2002-11-16 13:40

My university (college?) recital is on Tuesday, and although programme notes are not essential, I would like to have some. I'm playing the Spohr 1st concerto, and the Piston Concerto. Anyone know where I could find any fairly general information on these composers... particularly Piston. I'm about to go and check the insides of cd booklets of my recordings. Thanks.

The Lives of the Great Composers by Harold Schonberg is my favorite book for program notes research. Piston is only mentioned briefly but there are a bunch of references to Spohr in the index.

Aussie Nick...For the Piston Concerto, look up the American composer John Adams...GBK

Lots of interesting stuff on Spohr if you just have a go at <Spohr> in your search engine.

Find <The Spohr Society of Great Britain> and there you go!!

I assume that Piston is mentioned on a search also.

Sometime in your career grab a good soprano and do Spohr's Six German Songs. I've just done them twice on a "mini tour". They are wonderfully written esp for clarinet (fantasia-like) and the interplay is delightful.

All the best for Tuesday.

Aussie Nick - can you tape/mini-disc record your Spohr - I'd love to hear it (yes, it's WAY out of copyright). Do NOT record the Piston - still in copyright

thanks
