Has Selmer Hired the Leblanc Blurb Writer?
Author: Ken Shaw

selmer has apparently hired the Leblanc blurb writer. Here's what they're saying about the Artys model:

"Today, the Selmer Paris clarinet range is an artistically open offer. In the very heart of this variety, "Artys", expression of the Selmer maturity and modernity, sets the tone. The Bb and A "Artys" clarinets assert themselves as high quality, all-purpose instruments, covering a wide range of playing options. The profound personality of this model is built up from an amazing playability and a deep, resonant tone. The overall sound and tuning qualities are particularly homogeneous through all the registers and shades; a great flexibility and a remarkable control complete the global acoustic performances."

This comes from the WW&BW Paris offer at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=921982425, and it may have been originally perpretated in French. At least there's nothing about the tone being "more youthful."

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

It might be well to remember that Tom Ridenour, who was the LeBlanc accoustical designer of the Concerto/Opus LeBlanc models is now in the private sector (working at a large Denton, TX music store) and advocating the virtues of the new Selmer clarinets.

The Artys that you saw in e-Bay is meant to replace the 10SII model. I was reading some promotional literature for the Artys that seemed to be copied word-for-word from the 10SII literature. In reality the Artys does have a different bore dimension that the 10SII (.571" vs. .567" for the 10SII). It would be interesting to get comments from someone who has played the new Artys to get some feedback. I live in a city that sells virtually Buffets only so clarinettists have little opportunity to experiment.

I clicked on this because I always enjoy anything Ken Shaw has to offer. It looks like Selmer got hold of the same PR people who do menus for fast food joints. In other words, typical commercial bla-bla-bla signifying nothing

Tom Ridenour works for Brook Mays Music Co., a company with roughly 70 something stores around the country. They sell all brands of clarinet--including his own Ridenour models. He usually says nice things about Selmer clarinets, even before he went to work for Brook Mays.
