 a silly question

I was listening to a recording of the Goodman Sextet playing "A Smooth One" a while back, because I was transcribing a few things from several songs, and I noticed something. After the second sax solo, while they are playing the main riff, right at the beginning of the phrase, there is a drum beat along with a really weird duck like noise.

Anyone have any idea what on earth is making that sound? I'm guessing it's the tenor sax, but I'm not sure.

Just wanted to know, since it's been bugging me for a while.

An Eb Mallard?

Seriously (sort of), which recording? Is it on a CD? Title of the CD, or at least the label? RCA? Columbia?

If I have it, I'll give it a listen.

That sort of thing is illegal to do onstage in MOST of the US.

Ah, the good old days...when poultry new its place.

Do you live close to a marsh???

Seriously, however, Lional Hampton (Goodman's usual vibes guy) used to make some extraneous vocal noise when he played. Is he on the track???

(this postings responses kind of "quack" me up a bit)

No, Lionel Hampton was not on the track.(But I am familiar with the many odd noises he made while performing, it cracked me up the first time I heard him.) Charlie Christian was on the recording session, I know that, so was Georgie Auld and Cootie Williams, and I'm not sure who the pianist, drummer, or bassist was.

I listened to what I think is the same recording last night [on "A Smo-o-o-oth One": Benny Goodman (cl) + Cootie Williams (tpt), Georgie Auld (ts), Johnny Guarnieri (pno), Charlie Christian (elec. guitar), Artie Bernstein (bass), Dave Tough (drums)]. It's on a Columbia CD: The Benny Goodman Sextet (1939-1941) featuring Charlie Christian (CK 45144), drawn from a few recording sessions.

I'm pretty sure those "quacking" sounds (there are more than one) are Cootie Williams' (probably muted) trumpet. Just a series of short, punctuations, as it were. They don't sound particularly musical, but may sound weirder than they actually were because of recording limitations of the time.

My best guess.
