 Using trill keys

What's the proper way to use the trill keys?

I'm so trained to use the edge of my index finger on the Eb key that I do the same with the upper trill keys when trilling, say, from Bb to C. That requires taking my right hand off the lower keys and bringing it up to the top. But it takes me out of position to get to lower notes immediately after the trill.

Is it best to keep the right hand in position and stretch the thumb up to do trills? I don't think my instructor and I ever covered this back when I studied.

You are trilling correctly. As for getiing back to the right hand notes, you just have to be quick. Useing as little right wrist motion as possible will help the "move." No wrist action is recommended, but for many of us, that is hard to "not do."

If you have slightly longish fingers and flexible joints, if may be possible to simply move the index finger and use tip or side of the tip of the finger. Then the other fingers can stay in place. This is basically what I do.

Try to keep the wrists relaxed and move with flexibility, any tension in the wrist will make it so much more difficult to play....
