 The Evil Gnome

Anyone ever played "The Gnome" from Pictures I by Mussorgsky? We're playing it in orchestra, and I think that it is perfectly evil...quite a challenge to say the least. Any tips on fingering for the first part?
Thanks...

If I'm thinking of the right spot, slide with L-pinky from E3-C#4.
