 Alto body length
Author: William Hughes

For all my fellow Eb alto clarinet afficionados:

There is an unused alto clarinet case for sale on eBay. My old Linton alto (a Malerne stencil) could use a new case, so I e-mailed the seller to be sure it was for the one-piece body style. As an after-thought, I also asked the length of body the case would accommodate. The reply was 24 7/8", but my alto body (sans neck and bell) measures 27 1/2". Are newer altos shorter than they used to be or does the body length vary this significantly from brand to brand?

I just sold mine, a one-piece Buescher, and the case length measurement for shipping was 28 1/2 so your measurements are correct. I think he was wrong!

Unless the case for sale was for an older low-E alto?

Some alto clarinets have the low Eb on the body and some on the bell. That could easily make 3 inches difference.
