I am just curious how many of you have tried those computerized learning courses for clarinet? (You know, the ones with the CD inside the back cover) I'm not opening a can of worms here am I?

I haven't tried them, but I can tell you that if I had, I would probably still prefer the real lesson.

My daughter used them in the beginning with great success. It takes a little getting used to. But, when used properly they can be amazingly effective. However one thing they never seem to tell you is that you need a good sound system on your computer. I mean a good sound card and a decent set of speakers. This should be common sense to most though.

For a person returning to the clarinet after some 25 years, I have found these CD's a great help. I think just playing the proper notes with the program helps. Now to find a good teacher (for old guys) is a harder task?

I was preparing a recital and used a couple of books with cd accompaniment with great success. Because a pianist is expensive it was a great way to work up the pieces before getting together with her. I think they are a nifty, techie tool.

Michael -
It shouldn't be too difficult to find a teacher of old guys. I am a returning player after over 25 years of not playing. I have had 2 different teachers.
I think I intrigue them because they don't have to teach me fingerings (too much anyway) but I have or had every bad habit you can imagine.
We are different than beginning students but since we pay for our own lessons we are more likely to put some effort into it. Of course because we have to work etc we may not always be able to practice as much as we want.
