 old mpc: "G G -1"??
Author: connie

This is the inscription on a crystal mouthpiece belonging to a friend of mine. It is about 30 years old. He recently had an accident with it and is looking for a replacement. Anyone know the manufacturer and/or what type of facing/tip opening might be similar?

If it helps, he thinks there may also have been a "G G +1".

OR is it possible to have the old mouthpiece measured to try to find a similar replacement?

connie...Most likely it was a Pomarico, which were faced GG1, GG2, GG3. The GG3 was the most open.

Pomarico no longer uses these designations. Today their facings are notated by emerald, sapphire, diamond, ruby, etc...GBK

One addition: The Pomarico "GG" mouthpiece facings were named (and made for) Ephriam Gigi, who was a clarinetist and conductor, and not for Gino Cioffi, as is often (mistakenly) thought...GBK

Robert Listokin retired clarinet teacher at the North Carolina School of the Arts had most of us on the GG -1 facings in the early 1980s. As I recall, Mr. Listokin said that the GG mouthpieces preceded the Pomaricos at least in name. I know that we had a tougher time finding Pomaricos that played like the GGs. These Pomaricos were before the Gem named series, they also used -1,1,2,3,. If your friend can't find another they like, contact me. I have a couple of the minus one facings and maybe I can help.

I have 2 GG's for my bass cl, "Italy, 1 and 3", no + nor -. Yes, believe they are [early?] Pomaricos, who numbered them 1-4,5? somewhat like our early glass mp maker, O'Brien, have several of his Bbs [2 and 2S, refaced!] and a Selmer Clarion HS+[++?] and a "plain". I play on my BC 3 most for comm. band, the only tinkering with lay I have done was to carefully flatten the table [and shorten? the curve?], no tip change. On the too-close-for-comfort GG 1, sent it to Dave Spiegelthal who "opened it up" since he has knowledge and facilities well beyond me, I believe his fine print on it are "curve measurements" as are talked about on the www.yahoogroups/mouthpiecework [busy] site. It seems a bit more "classical" to me!!, but VG. Hope this may help, DONT DROP!!! Don

elmo...I've seen Guigui's named spelled the way you cited, as well as the (most likely) "Americanized" version Gigi, as I noted.

Actually, this 1958 version is the best:

TKS, GBK, for "Little Girls" like Gigi. I now take even more pride in my GG's looking at the nice pic. Don
