I checked the archives concerning this topic and found a few opinions on the Patricola Eb soprano but I'd like to hear more. Anyone played one recently? Or any of the other makes? The Patricola seems to have a pretty good rep though I've heard some negative opinions of the throat Bb venting mechanism.

The Eb venting mechanism does not work as well as the one one Rossi clarinets. Other than that, the horn is fine. If you are in the NY area and want to try mine, let me know.

I have one. I'm looking to trade it sometime in the hopefully near future on a Buffet RC or Prestige. I'm not happy with the intonation problems mine has, and it just isn't as sweet as a Buffet.

Hmmmm.....first itme I ever heard an effer discribed as "sweet." I have heard the Selmer effers discribed as sounding "less like Holloween." But, "isn't as sweet as a Buffet"--have you had your hear'n checked recently, mate???

i've heard the eefer being played "sweet".... two players that come to mind were Dianna Grubbs (former principal of the Odessa Symphony in Texas, where is she now?) and Richard Martinez (who teaches colledge in CA somewhere now?).
OF COURSE, it depends what piece you are playing- if it is "BRATS" by William Lind (for eefer and picc) then you have NO HOPE WHATSOEVER of sounding sweet. Only, not every single composer is so single minded that they see this instrument as only able to sound like... like... well, you know.

There must be considerable variation in intonation from horn to horn with the Patricolas. I've heard a number of people say that it's dicey and some that say that it's fairly good. I guess I should be prepared to try several different ones if I decide to pursue the Patricola. If one could be found with decent intonation I think it would present a good buy since these instruments are made from aged Grenadilla wood, have silver plated keys, and a number of extra mechanisms such as left hand Eb/Ab key and articulated G#/C# and the price is only about $1600. I've heard other people besides Ken say that the Bb venting mechanism is less than a great design (Charles Bay told me he sells Patricolas on which he has made improvements to the Bb mechanism) but as long as it didn't throw anything off like the Mazzeo system supposedly did I think I could live with it. I've been playing around with my cheapo Vito eefer and find that the little screecher is starting to grow on me so I'm sure a decent wooden model would be alot of fun to play. If the Patricola doesn't pan out I might check out the Leblanc Esprit which is in the same price range but doesn't have the extra keywork. My Esprit in C is a nice little horn with pretty good intonation.
