 Leblanc Sonata vs E11
Author: Paul Reynolds

I am contemplating getting a wooden clarinet, after having practised on a student plastic Yamaha for a while. I am still very much a beginner. What is the general feeling about the Sonata vs the E11? The reason I ask is that the advertising and USA pricing would suggest the Sonata is slightly better, but here in Australia they are the same price. I will be trying them out before I decide anyway, along with some others, but that apparent disparity made me curious.

In my opinion the Sonata and the E11 are totally different instruments. I could not say one is better than the other. The Sonata is an easy blowing instrument with an easy response. The E11 has a more darkened sound. So try them both.

I had a Sonata which was quite good, however, for a few hundred more dollars why not step up to the Concerto? I don't know what prices are in Australia, but I just got the Woodwind Brasswind catalog the other day and the Concerto price wasn't too bad.

Personally, I don't believe in 'intermediate' clarinets. At the moment (and I expect this to change, incidentally), the R-13 is not an expensive clarinet. Even if the difference is $700-800 I would say it is worthwhile.

Used R-13 over a new intermediate level clarinet any day, certainly.

After having spent considerable years performing on both Buffet (R13's) and LeBlanc (Concerto's) instruments, I have decided that Buffet clarinets--while they are not the easiest to play--offer the most dynamic range and focused sound for optimum musical expression. The Buffet's are my current instruments of choice--A, Bb, C (an E11), and bass clarinets--and have my professional recommendation. I am in agreement with those others who suggest "stepping up" right away to the R13 professional level as they are really not that much more espensive. Also, used R13's are affordable and can be just as good (or better) than a brand new model. However, the Sonata and E11 clarinets are both great student instruments--I just think that the Buffet E11 will sound better and enable more expressive musical performance.

From my experience, the Sonata has a less quality finish, but it's playing characteristics are those of a pro instrument, whereas the E11 is build as an instrument to learn to play on.

P.S.: personally I play a Buffet RC.

What HAT said.

There MUST be a local shop that has some second hand tack.
One in good repair may be a better bet than the 'step up' horns.

Before you make this leap, consider upgrading;

*Your reeds (Aussies make some good uns)
*Your mouthpiece (a more involved search)

The gear gets less important, the further it gets from YOU.

(It's all about the reed, ya know.)
