I always thought "Lemaire" was the company that eventually became part of SML, but I read here on a search that the Langwill Index says "Le Maire" is a stencil. Anyone know fer sure? --Bill.

Le Maire is a stencil. Not to be confused (except by the naive clarinet buyer) with Lemaire of Strasser, Marigaux & Lemaire fame.

There also was a clarinet from about 1800 that was labelled "Lemery". No further information seems to be available on it.

As noted above, Lemaire (as opposed to Le Maire) was the third partner of Strasser, Marigaux, Lemaire (SML). Within that company's model lines, the "Lemaire" clarinets and saxes were the intermediate models ("Strasser" was student-line, "Marigaux" was professional-line).

I have an SML (Marigaux)clarinet which I purchased sight unseen. It is a lovely instrument. Although it is wood I play it outside in the summer when I play in the city band and save my Rossi for indoor playing. And I know oboists who own Marigauxs and are very happy with them. Not that this has much to do with the original question. Just to let you know there are other clarinets out there worth playing.

I have a top of the line King Marigaux 350 clarinet (Marigaux marketed by King) that is absolutely remarkable. I use my R-13 as a backup.

Vytas, I was unaware of the "350" designation on some King Marigaux's. Do you have any information about years of production and if the 350 was offered each year? I have a King Marigaux w/o the 350. Is yours a 3-digit serial number also?

No, it's four-digit number. Serial number is 355X on the bottom of each joint. '350" is stamped only once on the top of LJ. Also, I've seen King Marigaux "285". It was made sometime in the 70's. Does your Marigaux have gold plated springs?

I used to have a Marigaux "S200" which was an intermediate clarinet sold new, in a one-time-only deal, by WW&BW back in the mid-80s, I think it was. I bought one sight unseen for $398 (about half the then-going price for Buffet R-13s) and it blew away the R-13 I had been playing on, which in turn I sold with no regrets! Marigaux/SML clarinets, saxes, and oboes/English horns (regardless of who distributed them) are superb instruments and should always be given a try if one's available.

Marigaux (SML) serial number 4928 here! (Almost) the best clarinet I have ever played. No S-200 or S-whatever, just "Marigaux, SML." But--I had a NEWER Marigaux/SML, same basic clarinet, just sold it, with a lower serial number: 3567. (But--why am I here at the computer anyway? I just got Selmer L296 in the mail toiday! Now if John Butler will only overhaul it, I'll be a happy person!).

I have no knowledge of musical instruments but recently found a black King Lemaire Paris France instrument complete in case when cleaning my attic. I cannot find serial numbers on it. Would you have any idea how old it is?
