 Alto Stand
Author: Ken in DC

I am playing in a concert and doubling on Bb and alto clarinet. I am trying to find a stand that will hold the alto that might also have a peg for the Bb (although I have a peg stand for it already, it would be nice to just have one). I have searched the web with no success. Any ideas?

Well, I play basset horn an most basset hornist I've seen use a 'bassoon stand' if they use one at all.
I did different. I made my own stand (easy metal work) out of some aliminum square tubes (20 mm), aluminum band (20 mm * 2 mm), self adhesive felt, a couple screws and (last but not least) a wooden clarinet cone with two steel wings as feet (I used theese feed again).

Perhaps you can see this stand on the pictures I allready mailed to "Nicole Y." - I do not know wheater she has allready inserted into her home page nor I remember her URL.

Let me know, if you need more info.

I use a Konig & Meyers bassoon stand for my alto clarinet and it works great. However, my alto clarinet has a peg and most don't.

I also double on alto and soprano and I have never been able to find a commercial stand for my alto. I cringe every time I have to set my alto down. I would love to see a stand available for the alto clarinet

Arnold,
I have, in fact, put up one of your pictures. Although I do confess that I *gulp* have not been keeping up with that promise to myself to update my page on the clarinet. So, if you want to see what I have...*I really must update it sometime.* You can go to http://i.am/the_eternity or http://listen.to/iamtheone or http://thunder.prohosting.com/~nikki/ *Note to self, cut down on url redirection.*

The Freshman,
Nicole Y.

I forgot to say, if your stand has a plane, horizontal metal-surface (on any leg) you may drill a thread (5 mm if metric) there to screw in a "traditional wooden clarinet cone" - thats what I did.
The sax stands I know offer allready such an thread. But I didn't take a sax stand in which to "hang in" the basset horn at the bell only - and perhaps the water runs into the holes if the instuments is stored in a "forward angle" position (neck over the bell).

Perhaps I'll make a technical drawing of my stand the next weeks. (Would you prefer HPGL, DXF or TIFF-g4 output?)

Arnold - when/if you get the drawing ready, please feel free to put it in the Uploads section here on Sneezy. I created that section specifically for this kind of thing (large files we want to share).

Cheers,
Mark C.

If you could post it here, that would be great. That way, any others who need one can get the info, too. Thanks.

Best thing i could suggest is the K&M bass clarinet stand. It has adjustable height for the brace that the horn leans against. But it still doesn't have a peg for Bb.

I made mine out of wood, with a coating of rubber. it took both horns, individually, or together. the rubber I used was actually a coating used for waterproofing electrical connections. good luck
