I would recommend the Buffet line of clarinets over any other brand. If you really like the LeBlanc's, I would recommend the Sonata model as a good student clarinet.

But the bottom line (ultimate real test) is how the particular clarinet playes for you. And cost should not fully determine your finale choice--only how well the clarinet plays.

As a beginner, you may find out that it isn't really necessary to spend more than $1,000 for a quality instrument to learn on. In fact, you can often get away with spending about $500 for something really decent.

I'm going to assume that you have a budget, and that you're still learning. So, why not get a used R-13? You can find them from $500 up to $900. Just factor in that you'll have to get a tech to look at everything and make adjustments. Check the classifieds right here on woodwind.org and you'll find a few.

Buy a Buffet and a Vandoren mouthpiece if you want to sound exactly like everyone else. The Esprit is a good horn just watch the tenon corks and use plenty of cork grease.

Ben,

If you have the money consider buying a new clarinet, even though some second hand clarinets may be good, when you buy a new one it will have 12 months warranty and will be in tune.

Good luck

In looking at the Buffet line, I would consider the E11 which is about $300 cheaper than the E13. If you buy the E13 and end up becoming very serious about playing, you will probably want to upgrade to the R13 down the road. Buying the E11 now and saving $300 will give you a nest egg towards a future R13 purchase. Or it will give you the luxury of splurging on a better mouthpiece and ligature. And if you never become very serious, the E11 will serve you well for most high school band/ community groups.

How can you tell if you have an R13 or not? I bought the horn in 1959. It was supposedly the top of the line Buffet at the time. The serial number is 49138 and the case has a tag that says "Crampon". The keys are some type of silver that I had to polish to keep bright. I paid $428. for the horn new. My father offered to match every dollar I made one summer toward a new horn. I made more than he thought I could so we bought the best.

See previous threads earlier in the past couple of weeks to see how to identify an R-13.

BTW, I just bought a used R-13, and the serial number is 49545. Based on your serial number, I can only assume that your clarinet was made exactly the same as mine - an R-13. Both were made in 1955. That was a great year for Buffet! Make sure you keep yours around.
