 No idea.

I have no idea what I wanna do as far as a career in music is concerned anymore. Did anyone else go through this at any stage? What happened? Did things 'work themselves out' or did you need some kind of reality check?

Morrigan,
Here's an idea: Consider a career outside of music -- then, because you will have a steady income, you will have the flexibility to do just about anything you want, musically speaking. Of course, it's harder to reach the highest levels of musical proficiency as a part-timer, but there are always tradeoffs to be made in life.

My (abreviated) life story: I always wanted to be involved in music as a performer, so (while still in high school) I choose music education as my vocation and played gigs at night and on weekends--the "best of *all* worlds." Taught public school instrumental music for 34 yrs and now retired, perform professionally (and sometimes *gratus*) in many different local venues on my clarinets, saxophones and flute. Jimmy Stewart--"What a Wonderful Life!!"

(the "rest of the story"--before all that, I wanted to be a medical doc)

In the depression days of the 1930's, I "toyed" with the idea of a musical career, but contacts with "hard-up" musicians and teachers, and my likings for chemistry-physics-mathematics directed me to a tech education-career, so now I look back comfortably, and spend retirement hours in musical [and tech] pursuits. Is good. Don

Guess I should admit that music was nothing but a hobby for me when young. Got to go to two world Fairs, played in a theatre pit orchestra, took my horn to war with me and played for the guys, on occasion. Went to Alaska for a aviation related job, got an offer to play on a cruise ship, which I turned down for a "real job." Played (no pay) in the Anchorage Symphony, met my wife who married me--not because I played clarinet but in spite of it--All that 55 years plus ago. So life happens as you plan something else.

Good. Seems like everyone is on key with what I was planning on doing. Especially William. At least it's good to know that I can still play part-time with my teaching career (hopeful teaching career that is) and still be able to play professionally when I retire.

I loved music, majored in music, left music. Three nights from now marks 40 years since the last time I played professionally (leading a ten-piece band and playing first sax at the Fort Bragg Officers Club). Since then, I have done around 47 (by real count) things. So what. Had fun, went a lot of places, met a lot of people, made a lot of money, spent even more of it. Still love music. Wish I had never stopped playing. Finally understood that playing the Clarinet is not mutually exclusive with anything else at all. You can do that and whatever else you wish. Except maybe if it's simultaneously playing the Ophicleide.

"Ophicleide." Boy did I ever have to look that one up.

Bob, that's because you missed all the fun on the thread "Fingering Trill Issue," at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=93042&t=93042.
Regards,
John

Morrigan,

Maybe it's a good thing that you don't know what to do. When I was in music school, I ONLY wanted to be principal clarinet of a major symphony orchestra. School is a time to explore your options, to learn about different career paths, and to practice!

While in grad school, I changed my mind about the orchestra thing. I decided to do musicology. Well, that didn't work out either, but I just knew I had to do SOMETHING music-related. So I got a job selling cd's. Ok, it's not the most ARTISTICALLY rewarding job, but I get to talk to people about music, and occasionally teach them something about music they've never experienced... About the same time I started playing folk music. I've become sooooo passionate about Bulgarian and other Balkan music. You never know what way the road will turn.

After a couple years of doing that full time, though I wanted to get back into clarinet teaching. I realized somehow, that that was something I needed to be doing. So there still is an outlet for all the classical training I've received, and I feel fortunate to be able to pass it on to others.

Basically, for me it came down to the fact that I knew I had to be involved with music somehow. As long as I've had THAT in my head, things _have_ "worked themselves out."
