I am a freshmen in college and am searching for a new mouthpiece. I have heard that Gigliotti are good, but I would welcome any suggestions.

I have a gigliotti and I love it. Get ready for a change though. Long facing means getting used to it. And I have a closed one. Search the boards. PLENTY of stuff on mouthpieces. I haven't searched myself, but I !GUARENTEE! there to be a lot of info.

I've experimented with many mouthpieces and I settled on the ones made by Ralph Morgan. They are truly exceptional and definitely worth a try. I use the RM28 (1.28 mm) model. The www.junkdude.com site has information about Morgan clarinet and saxophone mouthpieces.

Hey Alicia,

This is a long, and arduous, trek that you must make yourself.

No one mouthpiece is best for all players.
If you are fairly new to playing, I recommend staying with medium facings, and medium tip openings.

The Vandoren M series are examples of this median approach.

Long facings (like some of the Gigliotti stuff) require particularly stiff reeds and require some habituation from the player before you can control dynamics reliably.

Likewise, larger tip openings (like the Morgan RM28) require a rather soft reed that may force some unexpected changes in your embouchure to keep on pitch.

There are several living mouthpiece makers that can supply a credible mouthpiece for not too much money.

Have a look to the mail order sponsors of Woodwind.org and investigate getting some on a trial basis. Restocking is NOT free, but there is no substitute for play testing.

Long facing? How is facing measured and what is an average value?
