just a quick question.. I haven't played in orchestras for a while and now I have to play some pieces in few weeks in regional orchestra. One of the pieces we are playing is Otto Nicolai Overture 'Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor' but it's in C. I am not used to transpose in orchestra and I don't have time to rewrite it. Would you tell me some tips for sight transposing? I've never heard that piece either.. is it nice? Thanks

"The Merry Wives of Windsor"---never played it myself (but my Victor Polatschek studies book has one study based on this music). Transposing "C" clarinet parts is not hard -- play them on Bb clarinet a whole step up.

And remember the key change too! One whole step up is the new key! So play the piece one step up, but remember the NEW key change!

Looks like you're progressing very well. All the tips above are correct (just remember as you play one step up to add two sharps to get the right key signature).
What have you been doing instead of playing in orchestra?

Won...The Merry Wives of Windsor is written for C clarinet in the key of F major. Therefore, you will be playing it on Bb clarinet in the key of G major.
Try to find a recording of the piece, if possible
Also, I think that some of the C clarinet part is in one of the International orchestral excerpt books (possibly the 1st book?)
Prepare ahead as much as possible. Practice your scales in the key of G major...GBK

I know there are editions with the clarinet parts in Bb, because I played one of them many years ago. Perhaps Jeanne or Kalmus will have the part.
The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture is really fun. You'll love it. By the way, the words to the main theme are:
I wish I had an apple pie,
And I would give a piece to Otto Nicolai.

Thanks everyone! I'll just rewrite some hard passages and sight-transpose the rest! We are also playing Sibelius 1st symphony and Bernstein's "on the town". I'm kind of upset because I don't get to play the nice Eb solo!! But I get to play the opening solo in Sibelius and I like it.
Ron, I have been extremely busy but I still try to pracitce regularly because I have some competitions coming up. I also recorded my program for colleges (I'm not majoring but it might help me). I also did some chamber music with other very talented string players. I'm curruntly working on Brahms Quintet. Thanks for everything!

This piece has a catchy tune so to speak; i'm sure if you listen to it the transposing will become much easier. I played a band transcription of this piece a few years back...oh what fun! (;

Ah, yes... and you teamed up with a string ensemble too. That's great! Did you record any pieces with the string group? It would be nice if you can record as much as possible now for reference and some good ol' pleasant memories later on.
