(I'm new here, so be patient! )
The thumb key (for all notes besides open G) is broken on my instrument. I'm not sure what happened, but now when I press it down, the air won't go through that first section. By the time I get to "c", all I can get is a forced squeak. I looked at it, but I can't see anything wrong with it.
Can anyone point me to some good Do-It-Yourself repair sites? I'm sure there's nothing major broken; it's such a hassle to get to the music store.

Hi,
Are you a new clarinet player? I suspect so. Anyhow, from what you descibe, it sounds like the pad on the "top side" of the clarinet is not closing due to the broken key or may be missing.
While your description of exactly what is broken is not real clear, the repair is not a do-it-yourself. The repair will not be expensive unless the key is actually broken off and that is another story.
Also, if you have this broken key, what else is there? Find a local repair technician.

Hank's response is very good. I think he covered the bases.
I'd like to emphasize though, it would be helpful if you could explain 'broken'. Is the thumb key actually broken (I mean, a piece of it has separated) or is it moving okay but just not functioning like it should?
( Most of us who drop by here are verrrrry patient by the way)

keep in mind that what may not appear to be much of a repair to most of us can often be much more than what it appears. For example, if it is the pad that is onder the A key, this can be hard to seat properly. Leave it up to a real repairman. That way you will be sure it is done properly, and you can focus on your job-playing!

(Actually I've been playing clarinet for 6 years. Terminology isn't part of my studies these days. )
Yes, the description I gave wasn't very good. Sorry about that. However, you three gave some good tips. I'll remember your advice if something goes wrong again. Thank you!
I took it in to my band instructor yesterday and he took a look at it. The key wasn't broken, but one of the longer keys on the side was bent and it was putting pressure on something. He didn't explain what exactly happened, but he pushed everything back into place.
Now that that's solved, I hope you don't mind if I brows the board.
