 SANIMIST On Mouthpieces

I gotta ask . . . SANIMIST Mouthpiece Disinfectant (the green juice you squirt on mouthpieces at the store before/after you try them) warns against using on rubber or rubber-based mouthpieces or parts. So I guess that leaves plastic and glass mp's, right?

SANIMIST contains 70% Proponal (sic). I'm familiar with propanol (iso- and n-) - both alcohols (product does say it contains "alcohol"); also familiar with propanal - an aldehyde. But never heard of Proponal. I've seen this stuff used dozens of times on rubber mouthpieces at the store, so why the warning? Anybody have any bad (or uneventful) experiences with this product?

Propanol is slang for common isopropanol or the "drug store" brand alcohol. Isopropanol is not good for rubber in the long run but a quick mist and wipe off probably will not cause permanent harm (also will probably not kill bad bugs very well). Most of the reactions with rubber and alcohol are time and temperature dependent so if you cut the time then the adverse reactions are also diminished but not vanished. Other mouthpiece disinfectant or sanitizing solutions on the market contain quaternary ammonium compounds which also react with rubber and are less germacidal than alcohols. We have had several topics on sanitizing mouthpieces and the differences between sanitizing, disinfecting and sterilization.

Mouthpiece sprays are to make you feel good and protect the seller from complaints. The real protection is your immune system, which kills any bacteria normally in the mouth. Otherwise you'd risk disease every time your mother gave you a kiss.

Try out mouthpieces with confidence. Let people spray if they like, and don't worry about it.

Best regards.

The specifications for killing bacteria with the isopropyl alcohol mixture in disinfectants are at least 10 minutes total contact at 70 degrees F.

I assume your guess of isopropanol is correct, though the label clearly states Proponal. I know of no naming system that uses that name for any alcohol or aldehyde.

But that's OK . . . I was really more concerned about the mouthpiece than the bacteria.
