 Richard MacDowell - U Texas
Author: Mitch K.

Has anyone heard Richard MacDowell, clarinet professor at University of Texas, play? I'm interested in attending UT as a freshman next year, but I don't know anything about him, his playing, or his students' playing. Any info would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Mitch King

I studied with him in High School. He is a student of Robert Marcellus and Stanley Hasty. Plays with wonderful sound and great expression.

I am studying in Ithaca, NY and I heard him play a few weeks ago at Cornell. I don't know why he is here; maybe he is on a sabbatical. I have also seen his name and number in the local music store for clarinet lessons. When I heard him play at Cornell he was playing in an ensemble, but from what I could tell he had a very beautiful, centered tone that blended well with the other players. I don't know him or any of his students but if you are near NY maybe you could get a lesson with him.

my experience with Mr MacDowell= his students (Graduates) have raved to me about how good he is as a teacher.... i've heard him play and really liked it- very musical i thought and i'm a pretty hard judge to be honest.
In conversation with him i found that we disagreed on the merits of some other players (won't name anyone).... mainly players we'd just heard at a conference that i liked but he didn't... but in the end i liked HIS playing so it didn't really matter that we disagreed about others did it?
he's not just GOOD, he's INTEReSTING
plus i believe he's at a pretty good school- from what i hear lot's of good students (other instruments) and playing oppertunities
that's it from me

Watch the movie "Waiting For Guffman". He's the clarinetist.

Some weeks ago, I heard Mr. MacDowell play the Schubert Hirt auf dem Felsen in Ithaca. It was first-rate: beautiful sound, technically flawless (including the flashy bit at the end), and musically fresh.

The Univ. of Texas is one of the most respected universities in the world. You cannot go wrong with the music program and the cultural influences you will discover in Austin, TX and through the U.T. programs. But, keep your grades high--very high--because not everyone can get in and they're hoping to limit the numbers of incoming freshmen again. To be a really good player you'll still need individual instruction--even with the wonderful staff at U.T. Austin.
