I'm taking private lessons and my teacher has told me that I'm tounging wrong. Instead of moving my tounge up and down, it's going back and forth. I'm trying to correct it but I'm having a really hard time with it. Any suggestions to help me out would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Angela -
No amount of description is as good as working with your teacher, who is right next to you and see and hear what you're doing. Changing your tonguing method is not easy, so I'm not surprised you're having a hard time. Don't give up. Keep at it with your teacher's help, and in a few weeks everything will be fine.

Right understanding first,exercize is the second step.
I think misunderstanding of toungue position comes from considering the toungue as one thing. No. Tongue is a big physical organ. Recently,I obtained a booklet by Charles Neidich and his ex-student Ohashi(published only in Japan) and I learned very clearly what caused my clumsy tonguing. He writes:
1)Where tongueing occur: Tip of the toung should touch the reed at about 10 mm from the reed tip. Do not touch the reed at the place close to the tip, since it will make the reed deform and need time to come to natural form and jeopadize smooth tounguing.
2)Tougue is a big organ. Although its tip should touch tha same position of the reed, its big part's(like a trunk of the tree) position moves by tone range. The higher the tones, the higher and forward inside our mouth this part of toungue position.
p.s. I did not necessarily trust my teacher always in my youth.They often impose us how to do but not why. Sometimes it is what he was taught by his own teacher.

Work at it slowly. Remember that the tongue only controls when and how the sound starts. The air from YOU produces the sound. Think of what takes place when you take tongue AWAY from the reed; how cleanly does the sound start? That's the biggest hurdle, getting into that mode of thinking, taking your tongue AWAY from the read instead of putting it on the read. Think of starting the tones, not ending the tones. It comes with slow and careful practice. I went through it after not even having my tongue touch the reed when I was tonguing. You can do this. Work in comfortable ranges of your clarinet. I wish you success.
